I chose to summer at McDermott Will & Emery because of its esteemed reputation as a top-tier law firm, where many attorneys are recognized as leaders in their respective fields. My decision was strongly influenced by the firm’s robust culture of collaboration and mentorship, which I experienced first-hand during my 1L summer associate position. Observing McDermott’s commitment to professional development and the dedication its attorneys show in guiding and supporting each other reinforced my desire to return as a 2L summer associate. The supportive and collaborative environment at McDermott made it clear that this is a place where I could grow professionally and is where I want to pursue my legal career.
I had the opportunity to work on a diverse range of tax law assignments, spanning from international tax planning to tax controversy. One particularly engaging aspect of my work involved several assignments focused on transfer pricing. I conducted research on case law and guidance from both U.S. and international agencies, which deepened my understanding of this complex area.
I was pleasantly surprised by McDermott’s strong focus on pro bono work and community involvement. The firm’s dedication to leveraging its legal expertise for social good is a significant part of its culture. This commitment not only reflects the firm’s values but also creates a supportive environment where lawyers are encouraged to make a positive impact beyond their billable work.
McDermott does a great job at organizing events to allow summer associates to have fun and get to know both each other and the attorneys at the firm. We got to go to an Olivia Rodrigo concert, have a wine tasting at a local winery, and go to dinner at Nobu. And of course, the summer associate retreat in Chicago, where we got to meet summer associates from all the McDermott offices, was so much fun!
